Millennials are extremely hard to keep track of. It seems like every other week, there’s a new platform that they’re taking advantage of, or a new trend that they are following. Because of this, marketing to millennials can be extremely difficult. As a marketer, it is your responsibility to keep up with the always-changing trends and be able to jump on the opportunity when certain events go viral.
Know That Not All Millennials Are the Same
Millennials account for 80 million people in the U.S. That is a huge number – nearly a quarter of the entire American population. With a head count of 80 million, it’s important to know that you can’t just market to millennials as a whole. It’s important to note that out of these 80 million, there are hundreds of segments.
Let’s take social media for example – depending on a millennial’s interests and environment, they may frequent one platform more than the others. So while one millennial may use Facebook as their go-to social platform, another one may use Twitter.
This principle goes with all aspects of marketing to millennials. They don’t all have the same interests, hobbies or values. Depending on what your product is there will be multiple ways for you to market it.
Speak Their Language
By this I mean talk how they want to be talked to. But please do not become one of those cringey brands that uses lingo to try to be hip. If you’re a software producer, your target audience probably isn’t saying “LOL YOLO” so much as being bright, intuitive young adults. Speak the language of the audience you’re targeting and you’ll find that you’ll see more success.
Look into the causes and passions are of your target audience. This isn’t just for millennials – this is for all aspects of marketing. Whatever language your target audience uses – speak it.
Keep Up with Trends
This is arguably the most important aspect of marketing to millennials. With millennials, trends can come and go in an instant. As a business it’s important that you jump on these trends as quickly as possible.
For example, the current trend of of writing this article is the mannequin challenge. As a business, you could easily jump on this trend by creating your own video featuring your product and sharing it through social media platforms. This way, when people are searching for the mannequin challenge, your business could be seen.
The Internet Is Your Best Friend
Lastly, make sure you spend a lot more time marketing your product on the internet rather than through more traditional methods such as television, radio or print. Most millennials get the information on the products they want through the internet. In fact, 67% of millennials believe they can find a YouTube to gain information on anything they want. Another 63% of millennials search social media for coupons. Statistics like these show the importance of utilizing digital marketing when targeting millennials, as it can only benefit your brand!
